Exclude internal traffic in GA4

To exclude internal traffic in GA4 (Google Analytics 4), you can use an IP filter. Here are the steps to set up an IP filter:

  • Go to the Admin section of your GA4 property.
  • Click on ‘Data Settings' under the ‘Property' column.

Once you've set up the IP filter, you can test it by visiting your website from an excluded IP address. Your visit should be excluded from your GA4 reports. If you want to deactivate the filter, you can follow these steps:

  • Go to the Admin section of your GA4 property.
  • Click on ‘Data Settings' under the ‘Property' column.
  • Click on ‘Data Filters'.
  • Click on the three-dot menu next to the data filter you want to deactivate.
  • Click on ‘Deactivate'.

It's important to note that once you apply a data filter, the effect on the data is permanent. If you want to hide data from certain reports without permanently filtering out the data, use report filters instead. Also, you can create up to 10 data filters per property.

Why is this important?

Excluding internal traffic from Google Analytics 4 (GA4) reports is important to enhance the accuracy of the data.

Internal traffic refers to the web traffic that originates from you and your employees accessing your website.

Here are some reasons why you should exclude internal traffic in GA4:

  • Internal traffic can cause data pollution in GA4, leading to skewed data and inaccurate insights.
  • Data-driven decisions based on skewed data belong in comedies, not in your business.
  • You target your paid marketing campaigns around potential customers, not your employees.
